Zebrasoma xanthurum - Red Sea surgeonfish example image.
The Red Sea surgeonfish (Zebrasoma xanthurum, sometimes incorrectly Zebrasoma xanthurus) is an unusual surgeonfish that is endemic to the Red Sea. It is relatively rare in the trade and often only available in limited numbers. The species has a strong blue coloration with darker stripes and yellow fins that are visible depending on the mood. As with other Zebrasoma species, it is very easy to keep, the animals are among the more robust surgeonfish and are quick to feed - in addition to frozen food, an additional supply of algae (e.g. nori leaves) is required, but the fish can also be easily accustomed to dry food. The Red Sea surgeonfish is suitable for tank sizes of around 650l and above for individual animals. In large, well-structured tanks of over 1000l, you can also try keeping them in groups - you should then use all the surgeonfish at the same time, as the animals are a bit more temperamental than, for example, the yellow surgeonfish (Z. flavescens).
