Chromis viridis - Green Swallowtail
Thanks to its peaceful behavior and easy care, the Green Swallowtail (Chromis viridis) is one of the most popular fish in marine aquariums - both among beginners and professionals.
Chromis viridis grow to around 7 to 8 cm in size , have a magnificent blue-green coloring and, depending on the light, have a beautiful shimmer. This makes the swallowtails a real eye-catcher in any saltwater tank.
Green swallowtails are very reserved and peaceful and therefore get along with almost all fish, corals and invertebrates. They are also considered schooling fish, which is why keeping them in pairs or, better yet, groups is recommended. These animals are also very vital and swim tirelessly around the aquarium during the day - which is particularly beautiful to watch when they are in a school.
In order to offer Chromis viridis the best living conditions, your reef tank should hold at least 200 liters (if kept in pairs) or 400 liters (if kept in groups) , the optimal water temperature is between 22 and 26°C . It is also important to ensure that there are enough hatching opportunities , as the swallowtails look for their own hiding place in the reef in the evening or when in danger.
Granulated, flake, frozen and small live foods (e.g. brine shrimp) are suitable for these omnivorous, continuous feeders, which feed on zooplankton in the wild. Due to the high food requirement , the food should be dosed several times throughout the day. An automatic feeder can be helpful here. Frequent feeding is particularly important when keeping a school, as otherwise rivalry can arise within the school. If this is taken into account, the swallowtail butterfly is also ideal for beginners. The most important things about Chromis viridis at a glance:
