Amphiprion ocellaris - False Clown Anemonefish "Black Strom"

The false clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is extremely popular in marine aquariums - and not just since the Disney film "Finding Nemo" (which earned it the nickname "Nemo fish").

Their behavior is extremely interesting - clownfish live in symbiosis with various anemone species, which they inhabit as pairs or groups. Keeping them alone is also possible, but this means missing out on a lot of the behavioral spectrum. The clownfish's skin secretes a secretion that protects it from the anemone's stinging cells.

For Amphiprion ocellaris, the natural symbiotic anemones are the carpet anemones Stichodactyla gigantea and Stichodactyla mertensi as well as the magnificent anemone Heteractis magnifica. Other species such as the copper anemone Entacmaea quadricolor, the leather anemone Heteractis crispa and the corkscrew anemone Macrodactyla doreensis are also accepted as alternatives, as they grow smaller and are better suited to aquarium keeping.
False clownfish are also known to accept other corals such as Euphyllia, Goniopora, mushroom leather corals (Sarcophyton) or disc anemones (Rhodactis) as hosts, although these can sometimes be damaged by the fish.
If the clownfish does not go into the anemone, you can try locking it up with the anemone for a few hours, for example under a salad bowl. Sometimes it helps to release it right next to the anemone when you put it in. The best thing is to just wait - the fish will eventually find a host anemone.

Keeping Amphiprion ocellaris is completely unproblematic. The animals readily accept any food. To strengthen the orange color of the animals, granulated food containing astaxanthin or frozen food such as Calanus is recommended. The animals rarely get sick and are also suitable for beginners. Due to the space required by the host anemone, the tank size should be at least 100 liters.

Breeding clownfish is easy. There are now even breeding forms. Our Amphiprion ocellaris also come from German breeding. The animals are extremely vital and are SM size.
