Acanthurus japonicus - Philippine Surgeonfish example image
The Philippine surgeonfish or Japanese surgeonfish Acanthurus japonicus is one of the demanding Acanthurus species. The expected final size is around 20-25 cm, but it needs a tank of around 800l-1200l with plenty of swimming space. The diet should be varied and, as with all surgeonfish, contain a high proportion of plants. It can be very aggressive towards other surgeonfish. When stressed, this species easily develops spots (cryptocarion), so care should be taken when introducing the fish to ensure that they are slowly accustomed to the tank and the existing stock, ideally with a swimming school. A UV clarifier can also be used as a preventative measure, and feeding them vitamin-rich food, possibly with garlic, is also beneficial.
